The Kidneys

The Kidneys are our foundation and our Will, performing as the main catalyst for action and strength in our life.

The Root

The Kidneys are very special organs situated on both the left and right sides of lower the back. They are known in Chinese medical terminology as the root or basal organs. The Kidney system is involved with the storage of vital Essence, vitality or Jing. The Kidneys can be associated with the development of Brain tissue, Blood, spinal fluid, marrow, teeth and bones. Libido levels, reproduction, water metabolism and a healthy life development are also associated with the health of the Kidneys. The Kidney(s) rule the lower body, are associated with the urinary bladder, is represented by the root of tongue, holds the basal fire [pilot light] or metabolic energy of the body, is related to the emotion of fear, is connected with the urinary bladder, assists the Spleen Fire, develops the Will, open into the ears, is associated with the flavor of salt and represented by the color of black.

Mingmen

The Kidney is said to be the organ that contains the mingmen, hard to describe at best, it is known as the pre-natal Fire that fuels our existence. Usually it is thought that the element Water controls Fire in the elemental, earthly sense. The mingmen is much different in that it is the Fire that lives within Kidney’s element of Water that fuels our lives. This combined elemental life force (Qi) is said to fuel all twelve channels and the five Yin organs of the body. When a Chinese herbalist refers to the mingmen they are also referring to the lower of the triple burners being the three metabolic, ethereal Fires of the body. Usually a Kidney Yang Formula is given to lead the Fire back to the source, re-kindling the mingmen. Herbs such as yin yang huo, bai ji tian and rou gui are used to warm the lower burner. A cold lower back, legs, incontinence, slow mental or physical movement, fluid retention of the limbs and mid-section, frequent urination and stiff, cold joints [especially the knees] are seen in this pattern.

Yin

Since Yin is represented by cooling, calm, water, Blood, night sweats and rest any such disturbance or deficiency in these areas may fall under the premise that the Kidney Yin may be lacking. Any lack of Yin as gathered and stored by the Kidneys can result in Yin deficiencies of either of the four organ networks being the Lungs, Spleen/Stomach, Liver and Heart. The Kidney Yin [Water element] is in direct control and balancing of the Heart Fire as pertaining to the laws of the Five Element Theory. As a result of lower Yin levels there can be a resultant increase of Yang [Heat or Fire levels] giving way patterns of dryness and heat disharmonies. Some of the problems associated with Kidney Yin deficiency may be: dry skin, ringing ears, water retention, night sweats, insomnia, emotional fright, constipation, restlessness, anxiety, agitation, joint pain (heat-type), red face , weak bones, chronic fever or sore throat, dry mouth, memory loss, hot palms/feet/chest, slow healing wounds, rashes or bumps, hair loss, weak eyes, extreme libido levels, dark urine, pre-mature ejaculation, hot flashes and a weak or sore lower back. A formula that may be helpful in the area of Kidney Yin Deficiency may be the Kidney Yin Formula.

Essence

As an attempt to explain Essence or Jing it would be best to keep it simple. There are many texts available to help further one’s knowledge in this area if the need arises. Essence can be looked at as all necessary bodily fluids including sperm, the same word for Jing in Chinese, as the fluids that are a person’s life force. Jing is a product of both Kidney Yin and Yang and appears before birth, pre-natal, and can be built after birth or post-natal. Some say that too much sex can diminish the Jing. Jing is also known as the storehouse and resident of the Will. A formula that may be helpful in the area of Essence or Jing loss may be the Kidney Essence Formula.

Patterns of Illness and Related Treatments

The Yin of the Heart is responsible for nourishing and stabilizing the Heart and Shen. When the Heart Yin is Deficient, a wider variety of disharmonies, especially those related to the emotions, may result.

The Liver Organ System is the regulator of both Blood and Qi. Yin and Blood [both components of Yin] are stored within the Liver. Factors that may cause a deficiency of Liver Yin and Blood could come from any excess causing Heat such as smoking, spicy foods or pro-longed stress. Spleen Qi Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency [the mother of the Liver] could also be involved in the depletion of both Blood and Yin. A Deficiency of Liver Yin and Blood will show in disharmonies such as malnourished tendons, muscles, bones, skin and hair. Menstrual cycles with low amounts of flow, vision problems, insomnia, a pale or lusterless complexion and chronic constipation can all be related to a deficiency in Liver Yin and Blood.

Essence, or Jing, is a very unique concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is responsible for developmental progress from conception to death. Essence is considered one of the sacred treasures that all people aquired from their parents, yet each of us will have varying degree of this Essence depending on our genetic lineage. Kidney Essence Deficiency will display through incomplete developmental processes in childhood development or in the process of aging. Also, if an individual has weak Essence, then conceiving a child may become a much harder task than usual. It is important that Essence is preserved and cultivated throughout life, not just for your own health, but for the health of your prodigy.

Kidney Yang is also known as the Life Gate or the Lower Burner or Fire of your body. It can also be viewed as your basal metabolism and at times referred to as the Ming Men. The Kidney Yang is responsible for vitality, action, food and water metabolism, assertiveness and libido. Deficient Kidney Yang may show with such patterns as asthma conditions, urinary incontinence, fatigue, impotence, anemia, excess urination, cold lower back and legs or general bodily coldness, abdominal and lower extremity water retention, hypertension and a weak lower back. Deficient Kidney Yang can usually, but not necessarily always, be found with the elderly.

This is a pattern that develops when Kidney Yin Deficiency has become a long-term and chronic problem. It includes the pattern of Kidney Yin Deficiency which is manifested by issues of dryness and restlessness within the body, along with a sub-pattern of heat which may show at the Kidney level, blood level, heart level, fluid level or other levels. The following disharmonies includes a very traditional criteria of the pattern, along with disharmonies that we often see paired with this pattern.

This Kidney Yin focuses on strengthening the water receiving and generation aspect of the Kidneys and the general moistening function of the other Yin organs, such as the Lungs and Stomach, essential to the regulatory health of the body. In essence, the Kidney Yin is responsible for keeping your body cool and moist. Any problems with overheating or dryness can often times be associated with Kidney Yin Deficiency. Promotion of the health of the Kidney Yin can be directly related to the Liver Organ System as the kidney is the mother of the liver as seen through the eyes of Chinese Medicine. This means that the Kidney supports the Liver in all of its functions and is essential for healthy Liver Organ System regulation. It is extremely easy to burn up your storage of Yin and difficult to rebuild it. Kidney Yin Tonics and Qi Gong are a couple of the few means to regain the element of Yin. There are many patterns that may appear with Kidney Yin Deficiency. Some of these manifestations may show as: incontinence, insomnia, slow healing wounds, dry/red/flaky/itchy skin, hip/knee/ankle pain, heat in the palms/feet/chest, night sweats, low grade fevers, frequent urination and a restless composure.

The Lung Yin is responsible for moistening the Lungs, skin and upper body internal cavities. The Stomach Yin is closely related to the Lung Yin, but it is responsible for nourishing the stomach and ensuring proper digestion takes place. When the Yin of the Stomach and Lungs is deficient, problems of internal dryness result, thereby creating other problems of internal heat and stagnation. The Lung Yin and Stomach Yin can become deficient from poor diet (with rich foods), smoking, and excess grief (whether present or historically).
