The Lungs

As the protector of your body, your Lungs are constantly distributing Qi and refined fluids to nourish your skin and Wei Qi (your shield that protects you from outside influences).

The Protector

The Lung's energy is descending and is associated with the distribution of Wei Qi outward to the muscles and skin in their nourishment and protection. It is associated with the emotions of grief and sadness, the element metal, the color of white or metal luster, the season of fall, the bodily fluid sweat, the Wei Qi or immune protection and the Large Intestines. The Lung Organ System opens into the sinus and nasal passages and is directly related to respiratory and circulatory energy. The Lungs are responsible for the mixing of air [Gong Qi] and food [Gu Qi] received by the Spleen creating Essential Zong Qi.

Emotions

If you have gone through, or are currently going through, a great deal of grief, sadness or loss and has not been able to "cut off" or resolve the connection you may have weakened Lung or protective Wei Qi. Disharmonies associated with weak Lung Qi may appear as shortness of breath, chronic lung illnesses [or a chronically low general immune system] and chronic cough. A formula that may help in replenishing the Lung Qi depletion would be the Immune Enhancement Formula.

Season and Elemental Changes

The Lung is a very delicate organ and susceptible to internal changes such as with the elements of coldness or heat. Smoking can directly damage your Lung Yin resulting in very dry skin, slow healing wounds, blood streaked sputum, wheezing and dry nasal and sinus passages. A formula that may help in replenishing the Lung Yin depletion would be the Lung Cough Formula. This is a powerful, two-fold formula that not only replaces precious Yin fluids depleted by Dryness and Heat but also helps to direct and correct Rebellious Qi [coughs] downwards. When an acute cold or flu has turned itself inward there is a good chance it will attack the Lungs. Combining with the element of Heat it can create an infection in which a formula such as the Lung Heat Detox could be the answer in clearing the heated phlegm, moistening the Lungs and encouraging dissemination. Hair quality is also reflected by the state of the Lung Qi. Dry and brittle hair could result from decreased Lung Yin as its failure to receive the water/fluids from the Kidneys. Our Lung Yin Replacement Formula is excellent for smokers or anyone with chronic Dryness and Heat involving the Lungs. Qi Loss Whenever a person coughs the Lung Qi is depleted due to the Qi energy moving in the incorrect, upward and outward direction. It is important to redirect the qi energy and water element downward to re-establish the correct energy flow of the body in order for it to regain its protective and dispersing quality. Redirecting the Lung Qi downwards is essential. The Lung Dryness and Cough Formula may be an excellent formula helping to reduce and redirect the Lung Qi downward.

Some basic Lung disharmonies may be:

  • Chronic heated phlegm [green, yellow, dark in color]
  • Chronic cough
  • Spontaneous sweating
  • Dry throat/nasal passage
  • Mental and physical fatigue
  • Low immune
  • Unresolved sadness/grief
  • Blood streaked sputum
  • Dry, flaking skin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Edema of the body and extremities [water retention]
  • Night sweats
  • Constipation
  • Clear, copious mucous
  • Fungal skin problems

Patterns of Illness and Related Treatments

Wind Heat is best described as the common cold with Heat. In short, an external pathogen is attacking the surface (skin and upper body) manifesting with heat, inflammation, infection, irritability and so forth.

The Lung Yin is responsible for moistening the Lungs, skin and upper body internal cavities. The Stomach Yin is closely related to the Lung Yin, but it is responsible for nourishing the stomach and ensuring proper digestion takes place. When the Yin of the Stomach and Lungs is deficient, problems of internal dryness result, thereby creating other problems of internal heat and stagnation. The Lung Yin and Stomach Yin can become deficient from poor diet (with rich foods), smoking, and excess grief (whether present or historically).

Wei Qi is what is known as your Protective Qi. If you catch colds easily, have low energy and require a long time recuperating from an illness your Wei Qi may be deficient. The Spleen and Lung Organ Systems are related to this pattern. The Spleen is responsible for regulating water and food intake, Qi strength and Blood manufacturing which are all directly related to your immune system or Wei Qi level. The Lungs receives the protective energy and has the responsibility of dispersing it throughout your body.
