Programs addressing workforce health have steadily gained momentum among large employers over the past five years, and some are now reporting a return on their investment. Disease management programs offer proactive strategies to individuals with chronic illnesses helping them to avoid complications and reduce the need for hospitalization. In 2004, the two most common programs, targeting diabetes and heart disease/ hypertension, were offered by 55% and 46% of large employers, respectively, up from 42% and 36% in 2002. Among employers with 20,000 or more employees, 70% offer one or more disease management programs. For the first time, a substantial number of these employers (31%) have reported a return on their investment, although most (59%) have not yet attempted to measure it.
